Automated Marking System

Automated Marking System

The purpose is to investigate the automatic marking of emailed attachments, including the use of marking using key phrases and pattern matching. The system must be flexible - allowing the tutor to alter the solutions and the marking scheme easily. For example:

In one marking scheme, the phrase,

A database is used to record data

would not attract any marks, but,

A collection of related fields are held together in a record. There will be several records in a table.

would be allocated marks.

Overall statistics would be reported graphically as well as marks for individual attachments. The results need to be stored and trends analysed by date and email address of sender.

The investigation would consider the extent to which the form of the assessment (short answer questions or essay questions) affects the feasibility of automated marking. Additionally, the automated checking of excel spreadsheet solutions could be investigated.
